Changes the yahoo Account Recovery Process

There are few things more frustrating than losing access to your email – whether because you forgot your password or, worse, someone else guessed it – which is why we want to ensure that if it happens to you, the recovery process is as smooth and painless as possible. On that note, beginning this week, we’re rolling out some changes that will both improve recovery rates and make the overall Yahoo! experience even more reliable.
Here’s how it works: To help prove you are who you say you are if you ever lose access to your account, Yahoo! will now give you the option to provide additional account information such as an alternate email address and new secret questions. For US users, we will also incorporate the option to include your mobile phone number. We’ll store this information securely in your record so that if you ever lose access to your account, this data can be used to expedite the recovery process.
We’re doing this to help eliminate the headaches caused when people forget their registration details – you’d be surprised how many people can’t recall the basic information they provided when they signed up for their Yahoo! ID. In addition, with the advent of social networking and public profiles, details like your zip code or birthday may be publicly available, and we want to better protect your online experience by making sure you’re the only one who can accurately answer our account recovery challenges.
Beginning this week, after successfully logging into Yahoo! Mail, select users will be automatically redirected to a page where they will be asked to update their account with this new information. Users who wish to update their account information proactively can do so by visitinghttps://edit.yahoo.com/commchannel/manage. Also from now on, anyone who successfully recovers a lost or compromised account will be asked to update their information to this new standard at the end of the recovery process.
We take privacy very seriously at Yahoo!, and this is part of our overall commitment to providing a safe, easy to use, and reliable online experience. For more tips, be sure to check out our guidelines forspotting online scams and top tips for protecting your Yahoo! Mail account. Tips for protecting your Yahoo! Mail account

We want to make sure we give users info about steps they can take to enhance the security of their account.  So our VP of Mail, John Kremer, has put together a message (courtesy of the Yodel blog) that highlights many of the things people can do to protect themselves online.
—————————

Mail security tips

There are nearly 275 million Yahoo! Mail account holders worldwide.
Since one Yahoo! Mail address is in the news today, I thought this might be a good time to remind everyone about some online safety tips that will help protect your account. (In order to protect the privacy of our users, we can’t get into specific details of any of our users’ accounts — we know you’d want us to do the same for you!).
  • Choose a strong password. It’s like a toothbrush – choose a good one and don’t share it. Your Yahoo! Mail password can be any length and can contain spaces, symbols, or numbers –- letting you come up with something that’s easy for you to remember but impossible for someone else to figure out.
  • Avoid using a complete word from a dictionary (English or otherwise) or a name.
  • Use at least 7 characters. The more the better. A long but simple password can be safer than a shorter complex one.
  • Use a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and standard symbols (! @ # $ % ^ &, etc.).
  • Don’t use personal information that someone could easily figure out. Avoid a password based on information easily obtained about your (a birthday, your child’s name, your phone number, school name, etc.). Don’t use a password you already use for another account, like your bank account PIN. And don’t’ use your Yahoo! ID (or other username) in any form (reversed, capitalized, doubled, etc.).
  • Avoid the obvious. Attackers tend to first try repeating letters or number sequences (123456). Stay away from “test” or “password.” And when you change your password, which you should do relatively often, don’t just add a number to the end.
  • Create a sign-in seal. Yahoo! and many financial institutions let you personalize yoursign-in page to help you make absolutely sure you’re not falling victim to a phishing scam. See a photo of your cat Rupert? You know it’s safe to proceed.
Cybercrime is an industry-wide issue and we’ve been working with the industry in combating it (with innovations like Domain Keys). Rest assured that we take security and privacy very seriously here.
You are the first line of defense. Head over to antispam.yahoo.com and security.yahoo.com for more tips to help you protect your account, your privacy, and your identity.

How to Contact Yahoo! Mail Support

Think you've found a bug in Yahoo! Mail?
Why, no — it's obvious: the message should not look jumbled like this, dragging images around should work, and this error message is not worth the digits that make it up.
It's great, in a way, that you uncovered the bug; you will report it in a way that lets Yahoo! Mail engineers fix it in a cinch. Of course, Yahoo! Mail support can also help you with problems and issues that are not exactly bugs.

Contact Yahoo! Mail Support

To get support for and with Yahoo! Mail:
  • Find out whether the problem you have can be reproduced by taking certain steps. Also try with a different browser or operating system, if you can.
    • If you have steps that will produce the bug you face reliably, the chances of having it fixed fast increase.
  • Fill out the Yahoo! Mail Troubleshooting Form.
    • Make sure you enter your steps for reproducing the issue under Specific Details (Optional).

Recover Lost Mail

You can also contact Yahoo! Mail support to have your mailbox restored to an earlier state— to undelete purged mail, for example.

Recover Lost or Deleted Yahoo! Mail Messages

A message, a folder or even all your mail has disappeared inexplicably? You have frisked and scoured your entire Yahoo! Mail account to no avail: they're gone. Or are they?

Act Quickly to Recover Lost Yahoo! Mail

If you act quickly, there's a chance Yahoo! can restore your mailbox to a previous state from a backup copy, recovering your lost messages whether you accidentally emptied theTrash folder containing an important email or whether a Yahoo! Mail glitch made mail disappear.
Of course, you can also undelete a message quickly as long as it is still in your Yahoo! Mail'sTrash folder.

Undelete Mail in Yahoo! Mail

To undelete a message in Yahoo! Mail or Yahoo! Mail Classic:
  • Go to the Trash folder.
  • Open the desired message.
  • Click Move in the Yahoo! Mail toolbar.
  • Select Inbox or any other folder to recover the message.
    • In Yahoo! Mail, you can also drag and drop the email to any folder, of course.

Recover Lost or Ultimately Deleted Yahoo! Mail Messages

To rescue messages that have disappeared from your Yahoo! Mail or Yahoo! Mail Classic account during the past 24 hours or undelete messages after you have emptied the Trashfolder:

Restore Lost or Deleted yahoo Emails

Please note that we will do everything in our power to restore your messages, but recovery is not guaranteed. If your email messages were lost or deleted:
  • Within the past 24 hours, please fill out this form and we will make every attempt to recover your emails.
  • More than 24 hours ago, while we will make every effort to recover your messages it is less likely we will be successful.
  • We cannot pick specific emails.
  • We cannot pull a certain time frame such as a week or a month.
  • We cannot pick from one date to another.
  • All emails you received after the recovery date will no longer be available.
Since restoring email that has recently been deleted requires very specific information, we have created a form that will walk you through all of the information that we need. Please send the restore form as soon as possible as this is an extremely time sensitive issue.
Next Steps: Any messages received after the day and time you selected above will not be included in the recovery. For this reason we strongly encourage you to do one of the following for any messages received after that time:
  • Forward emails to another email account (such as another Yahoo! Mail account, or Outlook).
  • Print emails that you want to save.
  • Save emails to your desktop as a text file.
Important Notice: Please be sure to check your junk or spam folder or filter if you do not see a reply in your Inbox from a Yahoo! Technical Support Agent
