BitTorrent is an incredibly useful tool for large file downloads. It’s a very fast way to share data on internet. You must be using a good torrent client, but when it stops near the end, and/or the seed count is listed as zero, it becomes an annoying situation. Go through this article to find 10 effective tips to speed up torrent download speed.
1) For both uploads and downloads, most ISP’s have specific bandwidths. Check the maximum download and upload speeds from your ISP. Make sure that your torrent download speed won’t cross the cap set by the ISP. Visit http://www.speedtest.net to check your ISP’s download and upload speed.
2) You should choose a better client like uTorrent, Vuze or the BitTorrent client itself. You should always update your client to the latest version.
3) The most common mistake done by the users is that they don’t check whether their BitTorrent client is allowed to connect to internet. You should manually configure the firewall to accept the connections and let it through the client. If you’re using default windows firewall then there’s no need to worry about the settings. But if you are using third party firewall program, then you need to check the settings and allow programs list to see if uTorrent is added in the white list or Exception lists.
4) After applying above mentioned tweaks if you are unable to get the better speed, then you can proceed to alter the advanced settings. you can access it by going to Preferences > Advanced.
Change:
- peer.lazy_bitfield – to false
- net.max_halfopen value to 50
- bt.transp_disposition value to 255
- bt.tcp_rate_control to false
- peer.disconnect_inactive_interval value to 300-600
5) You can experiment with protocol encryption. Protocol Encryption in most of the torrent clients overrides this bandwidth shaping. Click on “Enabled” from the “Outgoing” option and then check on “Allow Incoming Legacy Connections”. Experiment with enabled, disabled and forced options. You could get better speeds with encryption disabled.
6) You should go for healthy seeds and peers. A peer can be any computer that participates in the download and upload of a torrent file. A seed has one complete copy of the file being shared across the torrent network. The greater the number of seeders, the healthier the torrent is. You can add more public tracker to get more seeds and peers. Follow the following steps to do this:
- Open uTorrent and then click on the torrent name from the list in order to select the torrent.
- You’ll find the General tab below, click on it.
- Make sure that there’s a field labeled Hash near to the bottom with a string of alphanumeric characters.
- Now right-click on the string and click Copy.
- Open Google.com and paste the value into the search box and press Enter.
- Now you can view a few result of particularly exact same torrent from all the torrent sites with this Hash tag.
- Download the torrent from all sites and open it in uTorrent.
- A pop up will appear saying, “The torrent you’re trying to add is already in the list of torrents. Do you want to load the trackers from it?”
- Hit the yes option in order to add the trackers.
7) Unlimited upload rate hits the download rate. You should go for the speed test. Find out your maximum upload speed and then set your client’s upload rate (Global Upload Rate in uTorrent) to about 80% of your maximum upload speed. Check the speed units ““ it may be given in kilobits per second (kb/sec) or kilobytes per second (kB/sec). 1 kilobyte = 8 kilobit.
9) By setting up Speed Limits in uTorrent can speed up the download speed.
- Open uTorrent, and got to Preferences by pressing Ctrl+P.
- Choose “Bandwidth” from left column.
- On right pane, under “Global Upload Rate Limiting”, set the value lower than your upload speed you noticed from step 1 (speed test).
- Like if you have 1Mbps of upload speed then you should set the upload limit something lower it, suppose 800-900kbps.
- But for the “Global Download Rate Limiting”, set it to Unlimited.Set it to 0 (which means unlimited), to get the maximum speed.
10) Most BitTorrent clients let us view the individual files in a download. It’s better to selectively disable the download of files you don’t think necessary. You should be acquainted with the customization settings of your particular client available in the Help files or at the website FAQs.
